At Porto Hernia Clinic, we perform many surgeries on patients who no longer have health insurance coverage or who simply do not have insurance or another type of health subsystem capable of covering the costs. Our team believes that all patients should have access to hernia repair. To this end, we offer transparent and pre-established prices for patients with abdominal or inguinal hernias.
For patients who have health insurance, these plans generally cover part of the costs of both abdominal hernia consultations and surgery-related costs. It is important to emphasize that this type of procedure is never considered a purely cosmetic surgery, and for this reason, insurance companies usually cover part of the costs.
For the most common type of hernia, the inguinal hernia, the costs for laparoscopic repair are €1700 for the surgical team's fees and €2200 for the surgical center's costs (including operating room rental, all materials including prosthetic mesh, and recovery time). The total should be around €4900 for outpatient laparoscopic inguinal hernia surgery. However, these values are only indicative and may vary from patient to patient.
These values include the post-operative follow-up consultation. Other additional costs you may incur would be for pre-operative blood tests and an electrocardiogram, if necessary, and for analgesic medication after surgery. Please keep in mind that the values mentioned initially refer to laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair surgery. For other types of hernias, namely umbilical hernias, the cost will be different and usually lower. The same applies if the inguinal hernia is repaired via open surgery (traditional method). Laparoscopic hernia surgeries require higher costs due to the equipment involved. Treatment of a bilateral inguinal hernia generally adds about 50% to the total cost.
We understand that the process of getting your health insurance billed can be confusing. Rest assured, our administrative team contacts patients daily to help them understand which costs may be covered by their insurance. No procedure or authorization will be performed without your consent and knowledge. Furthermore, our team offers this service to our patients at no additional cost.
At Porto Hernia Clinic, we do not work directly with insurance companies or other agreements, namely ADSE. However, we can request authorization from your insurance company and determine if your insurance is accepted and under what conditions. Our team performs a FREE, quick, easy, and no-obligation insurance check.
Most insurance companies allow patients to self-refer for a hernia assessment. Our initial assessment consultation costs €95, but you can then, depending on the conditions of your insurance, request a partial or full reimbursement of this amount. Regarding insurance coverage for surgery costs, most policies do not cover the entire cost, requiring an additional fee that varies depending on the policy and its terms. You will be informed of the amount of this additional fee before your surgery.
Our administrative team specializes in obtaining authorization for any surgical procedures before you commit to surgery. Our experienced team can advise you on which parts of your deductible have been met, which parts have not yet been met, and what costs you may be responsible for. Regardless, we will ensure you understand the costs.
Our office accepts most forms of payment. For any payment, cash, credit cards, or checks can be used. These payments are typically made at the time of admission.
Our office is in-network for almost all major insurances as described above. However, for a few insurances and a select number of patients, the surgery center within our facility may be ‘out-of-network’. Our goal at Porto Hernia Clinic is to provide you specialty care within the constraints of your insurance. If your insurance offers out-of-network benefits for your surgery, we prefer to schedule your procedure at our center. However, if you do not have out-of-network benefits, or your out of pocket requirement is too high, we will ALWAYS schedule your procedure where your costs will be the LEAST. Our insurance specialists will walk you through the process to ensure your out of pocket expenses are always minimized.
