ABOUT US HÉRNIAS SYMPTOMS VIRTUAL CLINIC CONTACTS

Costs

In general, health plans usually cover both consultations for abdominal hernia and most of the costs related to surgery. It is important to highlight that this type of procedure is never considered merely cosmetic surgery.

At Porto Hernia Clinic, we perform many surgeries on patients who no longer have health insurance coverage or who simply do not have insurance or another type of health subsystem capable of supporting the costs. Our team believes that all patients should have access to hernia repair, regardless of their financial situation. To this end, we offer transparent and pre-established prices for patients who have an abdominal or inguinal hernia, with no additional hidden costs.

Pacientes não segurados: Quanto custa a cirurgia de hérnia?

We work closely with patients who are recently uninsured or who do not have health insurance. In today's modern society where health insurance costs are high, this is not an uncommon situation! At our clinic we are pleased to schedule an appointment with you without any additional obligation. If you decide to have surgery, the costs for uninsured patients are 1250 euros for the surgical team fees and 1300 euros for the costs of the operating room (including operating room rental, all materials, including prosthetic hammock and recovery time) and 350 euros for the fees of the anesthesiologists. The total should be around 2900 euros for the surgical treatment of an inguinal hernia using an open approach (traditional technique).

Laparoscopic inguinal hernia treatment on an outpatient basis costs a total of 4900 euros. This technique implies additional costs due to the use of laparoscopy equipment.

We have no other hidden fees or other charges for "follow up" inquiries. The other additional costs you may incur would be for pre-operative blood work and an EKG if needed and for your painkillers after surgery. Please keep in mind that the values mentioned refer to open inguinal hernia repair surgery, i.e. the traditional route, which are the most economical. Laparoscopic hernia surgeries require higher fees due to the cost of the equipment involved. Treatment of a bilateral inguinal hernia usually adds to the total cost by about 40%.

Insurance and Costs

We know that your medical insurance billing process can be confusing. Rest assured, our administrative team contacts patients every day to help them understand what costs, if any, may be incurred. No procedure or authorization will be carried out without your authorization and knowledge. In addition, our team offers this service to our patients at no cost!

What Insurance Do You Accept?

At Porto Hernia Clinic, we accept most insurance available in Portugal and ADSE users. Rarely do we have a patient who cannot be seen at our center due to their insurance. Patients can call our team to help us determine if we accept their insurance. Our team performs a FREE, quick, easy and no-obligation insurance check to ensure you are covered for any appointment or procedure at our centre.

Consultation Referrals and Insurance Coverage

Most insurance companies allow patients to self-refer for a hernia evaluation. If your insurance requires a permit, our team will be happy to help you obtain one. At your consultation, our team will help you understand what benefits you have if you need surgery. Most patients only have a small co-payment at the time of consultation. With regard to coverage of surgery costs by insurance, most insurance usually does not cover all costs, with an additional fee being payable, which varies depending on the insurance and conditions of your policy. Before performing your surgery, you will be informed of the value of the additional amount.

Surgery Coverage

Our office staff specializes in obtaining full authorization for any surgical procedures BEFORE you commit to having surgery. Our knowledgeable staff can walk you through what portions of your deductible have been met, what portions are still not met, and what costs you may be responsible for. Often patients will have only minimal out of pocket expenses. Regardless, we will ensure you understand any costs.

Forms of Payment

Our office accepts most forms of payment. For any co-pays, cash, credit cards, or check may be used. For patients who must pay for a portion of the surgery out of pocket, those fees may need to be paid before the surgery via a cashier check, money order, or credit card. Patients without insurance and cash patients can work with our office to arrange payments before the procedure.

In-Network and Out-of-Network

Our office is in-network for almost all major insurances as described above. However, for a few insurances and a select number of patients, the surgery center within our facility may be ‘out-of-network’. Our goal at Porto Hernia Clinic is to provide you specialty care within the constraints of your insurance. If your insurance offers out-of-network benefits for your surgery, we prefer to schedule your procedure at our center. However, if you do not have out-of-network benefits, or your out of pocket requirement is too high, we will ALWAYS schedule your procedure where your costs will be the LEAST. Our insurance specialists will walk you through the process to ensure your out of pocket expenses are always minimized.
