Why is it more frequent in athletes?
Activities that increase abdominal pressure may favor the appearance of hernias:
Bodybuilding
Cross training
Football or tennis
High-intensity running
Small weaknesses in the abdominal wall may become evident with exertion.
Can I continue training?
It depends on the symptoms.
If any:
Pain
Hernia enlargement
Discomfort during exercise
Ideally,reduce or stop temporarily.
The risk of continuing
Training with a hernia can:
Aggravate the size
Increase pain
Accelerate the need for surgery
And after the surgery?
Most athletes return to training:
Light exercise: 1–2 weeks
Progressive training: 2–3 weeks
Full return: 3–4 weeks
