Sports Hernia

Also known as “athletic pubalgia” or “gilmore’s groin” a sports hernia is an often painful, soft tissue injury that occurs in the groin area. Often it can occur when playing high intensity sports that involve rigorous movement and direction changes. Sports hernias are commonly misunderstood and many people confuse them with a traditional abdominal hernia. A sports hernia is a strain or tear of any soft tissue (muscle, tendon or ligament) in the lower abdomen or groin area. At London Hernia we have experience in treating sports hernia in people that play sport just for leisure, right up to professional athletes. Mr Romi Navaratnam, Mr Majid Hashemi , Mr Paul Ziprin and Mr Syed Tahir Hussain are specialists in treating sports hernia.

Causes Of Sports Hernia

Sports hernia is common in sports where a great deal of stress and strain is placed on the groin and pelvic area. This may be due to twisting, turning and kicking movements and is common in high intensity sports such as football and rugby.

Symptoms Of Sports Hernia

  •   Pain in the groin area that increases following sporting activity
  •   After undertaking sporting activity the person may feel stiff and sore

Symptoms of sports hernia include pain during movements and exercise, especially when twisting and turning. This pain can felt in the groin region, usually in the adductor muscle, but can also be felt in the testicles in some instances. For many patients it can be difficult to name the exact location of the pain. Pain will typically be worse following sporting activity where the person may feel stiff and sore when undertaking normal activities. Initially the person may be able to continue playing sport but over time this may get progressively worse and require treatment.

Treatment Of Sports Hernia

Sports hernia can be treated both with non-surgical and surgical methods. Non-surgical methods can include rest and physical therapy whilst surgical methods will be evaluated by your Consultant based on the severity of the injury. Pain in the groin can be misdiagnosed and as such it is important to be evaluated by a hernia specialist that is able to ensure you the best possible treatment method for your injury.
